Desert Dominion NewsletterPrevious Issues: September 2001 • June 2001 In this issue
A Note from the EditorThere may be some blank spaces in this issue. It can’t be helped…I’m sure you’ll understand… there has been so much turmoil that I have not had time to do the job the newsletter deserves. Please bear with me. —Johnie Life Goes On, Despite...You can bet that there will be a baby boom in about nine months. When catastrophe hits, the first thing we do is reaffirm life. Several times I have been asked, “Have you ever contemplated suicide?” I have several answers to this question. The one that is germane to the subject is, “No. Why should I kill myself? I can always find someone else to blame it on. Go kill them!” The second thing we do is point the finger of blame. It is a good idea to be careful where we point them. Some of our religious leaders have already pointed their fingers at the feminists, gays, and lesbians for being the root cause of the attack. This kind of thing, at this time and under these circumstances, strikes me as suicidal. Our enemy would like nothing better than to see America broken up into a thousand armed camps. They could just sit back and watch us kill each other. Let us not allow this to happen. Enough preachifying! 44 people attended the August seminar, BDSM 101 – A Basic Introduction. Many were members, but many were not. Some joined at that time. Hopefully, the September seminar, Negotiation, will be as well or better attended. Negotiation is a skill we all need, not only to set up a scene with someone we are interested in, but the skills can be carried over into our jobs and interactions with other people in any situation. (No, I’m not suggesting that you negotiate a scene here, merely pointing out that a lot of what we learn in BDSM have applications outside the scene.) The seminar on October 16 is Safety and First Aid. This is definitely something that can be used in more than just the BDSM setting. Everyone in the BDSM community needs to know these things. There were 45 or 47 people at the August play party; depending on whose count you go with. There were several great scenes, not all of which were discernable by just looking. D/s scenes are very subtle at times. I think there were 36 people at the September Munch. Good food and a good time conversing with folks in a non-threatening environment. Sometime in the future, Merryl Sloane is doing a "conference" (date to be announced) on Dominance (one session) and Submission (second session). We will be doing separate flyers for this event - it will be a special (more expensive) session separate from our regular educational meetings, and it will be in the nature of a fundraiser for the group. We will be holding a 50/50 raffle at the seminars and parties: $1 per ticket. Half the money goes to the group and the other half to the ticket holder. Board Members
Thanks for the long hours and late nights to keep this show on the road! About Desert DominionWe are a local pansexual, panfetish organization and welcome everyone regardless of orientation, age (18 and above), race, creed, religion, kink, etc. We would like to invite those who are in the lifestyle, new to the scene or just curious about bdsm to come to our events, meet us, socialize with us and learn with us. We are not a dating service or sex club. We do not find partners for people. We exist to support, educate, and socialize with one another in a safe, sane, and consensual domain . Our members possess a variety of years of experience, of education in related lifestyle activities, and have widely diverse interests. New Play Space Search ContinuesWe are still looking for a place in an industrial area or the like with at least 1,000 sq. ft. and not too expensive. We should be ready to lease by the fall. If you hear of a place where we can hold our meetings and parties, please share the information with a board member. Feedback Needed!Once we have our own space (hopefully soon) we will start mini seminars on subjects such as flogging, waxing. play piercing, etc, etc. Actual hands-on to learn how to do all these lovely things that we like to do. The board could use some feedback from you in the area of what you would like to see for educational events--both the two-hour seminars and the HOTs (hands-on training sessions). Also, any other activities that you would like to see sponsored such as discussion or support groups. Treasurer's Report
Web Site Submissions! We have the website live and most of the bugs worked out. We are preparing a section for submissions (writing, you perverts, not the other kind!) of fiction and non-fiction, poetry, reviews, reports on other events. We are also now soliciting interesting links and info to include on the site. Send your suggestions to: We will be setting up a voting form on the by-laws. Please read and think about them, and get ready to give us your feedback. Check the site out often, because it will be changing almost every week! And let us know what you think by giving us your valuable opinions! Events To Watch For(Editor’s note: If you know about events which should be included for the delight and enjoyment of our membership and the general kink community, please send the information to: webmaster@desertdominion.org , or: jwp0shanachie@qwest.net .) September PartySaturday, September 29th, from 8:30 pm until the last whip sounds! (We actually need to be out by 2:00 am, so the last whip should be sounding about 1:30 am, so we can break down and remove our equipment.) The location of the party will be given out to members only. Please call our info line: 792-6424, and leave your phone number so we can call you, or e-mail info@desertdominion.org . Same drill as always: $10.00/person. Bring an incredibly decadent or delicious share food for the potluck. Sodas, coffee and tea will be available for $1 a drink. A current DD membership card or a card from a reciprocal organization is absolutely required. No entrance without one. If you are not a member, but would like to be one, please see the membership section for details. MunchTuesday, October 2nd, we’ll meet at the Broadway Café, (southeast corner of Broadway and Columbus) at 7:00 pm. Dutch treat, this is a chance to introduce yourself to like-minded others and enjoy an evening of conversation and great food! Just a reminder: This is a social event, a group of equals meeting equals to discuss mutual topics of interest. The munch is not the right time to try out your new topping or bottoming skills, or to show off that great new outfit. That's better done in our party settings. The munch is more geared to support, making friends, and getting to know others who may well be candidates for play at a later date. Gender OutlawzA monthly discussion group for people of all genders and sexual orientations who wish to discuss issues of gender and society. Every first Tuesday of every month, at Wingspan, 300 E. 6th St. (across from the International Arts Center), 7—9 PM.
